The Future of Fashion at the 2013 British Fashion Awards

British Fashion Designers have been renowned for their ability to create new paradigms and direct the future of fashion. From punk auteur Vivienne Westwood and the relentlessly experimental Hussein Chalayan to the now-legendary Alexander McQueen, British designers are famed for their edgy sense of creativity.

The British Fashion Awards, held every year in London and established in 1989, celebrate the abilities of British designers, creatives and models to direct the global fashion agenda. Guests including Samantha Cameron, Donatella Versace, Kate Moss, Harry Styles, Miuccia Prada, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sienna Miller, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Tinie Tempah all gathered to celebrate the achievements of the British fashion industry over the past year.

The ceremony saw a total of 16 awards, chosen by 300 members of the fashion community, presented to leading figures across the breadth of the industry. The prestigious Womenswear Designer of the Year was awarded to Christopher Kane. Scottish born and a graduate of Central Saint Martins, Kane launched his label in 2006. Since then, he has won accolades as one of the leading lights in contemporary British womenswear design, a position firmly endorsed by the award.

Iconic British brand Burberry had a triumphant evening, winning both Designer Brand of the Year and Menswear Designer of the Year, which was awarded to Christopher Bailey. In many ways it was symbolic of Burberry embracing its British roots, with its London Menswear 2013 show being the first held in London in 10 years since it moved to Milan.

International Designer of the Year, a new award category for 2013, was presented to the hugely influential Miuccia Prada, the Italian fashion designer and entrepreneur behind fashion behemoths Miu Miu and Prada.
