WHAT IS HAUTE COUTURE?
“The people and companies that create clothes that are very expensive and fashionable.” - Merriam-Webster Dictionary
Swarovski crystals, south sea pearls, intricate French lace, hand painted designs and fabrics made from the finest quality––the best materials woven together by the expert hands of a true design master. This is Haute Couture.
Haute Couture is often considered a luxurious dream. It is that type of fashion that is constructed by hand, made from high quality materials, created with an extreme attention to detail and tailored specifically for the individual client. For consumers, it evokes prestige and exclusivity while for designers, haute couture is a statement of timeless tenacity and technical ability.
Only a few designers and fashion houses are certified as a ‘haute couture fashion house’. Strictly regulated by the Chambre de Commerse et d’Industrie de Paris, couture designers are definitely the cream of the crop in the fashion industry. Alexander McQueen, Dior, Eli Saab, Balmain––these are just a few of the designers/houses associated with this caliber of prestige. As new, creative and equally skillful designers emerge, more fashion houses are being added to the list including; Ralph & Russo, the first and only British house to showcase their collection in Paris Haute Couture Week, the ‘Architect of Detail’ Tony Ward, and the pride of Russia the house of Yanina Couture.
Although the masterpieces produced by these master couturiers are quite expensive, the art and glory of creating haute couture garments goes far beyond financial gain. It is the opportunity to express immense creativity and portray a beautiful story that drives these couturiers to create these fantasy creations.
Take a closer look at some of the leading and emerging couture houses from around the world, only on Haute Couture Exclusive. Premieres Tuesday, September 22 at 22:00 (GMT+8/GMT+2).
